Sustainable Food Production
SFP is a branch of Global Compassion Ministries that focuses on empowering people to provide for themselves. SFP builds shadehouses and teaches the art of agriculture to offer a sustainable supply of food to those who may not otherwise have one. Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the world with very few natural resources left to be gathered from the land. The small island in the Caribbean sea is split between the Dominican Republic and Haiti. The soils in the mountainous half of the island (Haiti) are thin and lose fertility quickly when cultivated. Deforestation has caused much soil erosion, and as much as one-third of Haiti’s land may have eroded beyond recovery.
